Skylar Townsend (born September 1, 1993), better known by her stage name Skye Townsend, is a free-spirited singer-songwriter and poet. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Even as a young child, Skye declared to those around her that she planned on being a huge star and always expressed her love for the arts. Skye lists Beyonce, Ella Fitzgerald, Tamia, Amel Larrieux, and Lauryn Hill as some of her influences but her love for dancehall, tribal and neo-soul artists are all evident in her music. Skye is an R&B singer who infuses her music with exotic instruments and hints of jazz. Townsend's lyrics are described as thought provoking and surprisingly honest and her songs revolve around themes of young love, taking risks, and evolving spiritually. She credits her classical training and love for unique genres and spoken word for inspiring her to think outside the box when it comes to production and the music she's recently been making.
During her earlier teen years, Skye combined her funny videos with her impressive vocals on her Youtube channel and explored ways that could enhance her audience using social media. Two years and millions of video plays later, the industry began buzzing about this funny and gifted newcomer. In 2012, at 18 years old, the singer-songwriter released her first EP entitled "VOMIT", which she described as a combination of all the sounds, stories and experiences that had inspired her journey. The controversial name definitely sparked curiosity and by the age of 20, Skye had worked with some of the biggest heavy-hitters in the industry while her audience continued expanding. Aside from singing and performing, the young artist stresses the importance of exploring different types of art and truly appreciating all types of talent.
in 2014, Skye discovered that she had a niche for public speaking and began traveling all over the United States speaking to young students about the importance of safe sex, HIV/AIDS, and how to maintain self esteem in today's society as a young black woman. Skye encourages young people to find innovative ways to make their dreams come true without compromising their personal beliefs. She finds it very important to inspire young women to have morals and go about chasing their dreams no matter what. She states, "People often search for the quickest way to the top. I believe that true longevity comes from working hard and never sacrificing who you are for a quick fix of attention. Stay humble and hungry and work your hardest. Your dreams will come into fruition when your work speaks for you!"
“I want to be unforgettable. I want people to see a photo of me years down the line and really remember how passionate I was about the arts. I am not just a singer nor am I just an actress. I am an artist. I also aspire to be a humanitarian. There are so many diseases, illnesses and issues in the world that can be avoided or terminated if people simply take the time to educate themselves. I always say that there’s a difference between talking and speaking as well as listening and hearing. When I open my mouth, I want to speak and be heard.” -S.T.
Now in her 20's, Skye is ready to take the industry by storm and is prepared to show the world what she has been planning for the past few years. She says her music is overflowing with growth and her passion is at an all time high. Her newest EP is entitled, Rocking Chairs and is available for purchase on iTunes. Keep an eye out for this rising starlet because the Skye is truly the limit!
